Spatial awareness. It’s something we don’t even think about. However, it’s one of the most crucial skills we develop, starting right after birth. It helps us understand where our body is in relation to the world around us and where objects are located. Without it, we’d constantly bump into things, struggle to use a knife and fork, or even write. We wouldn’t know if something was close or far, and grabbing objects would be quite a tricky task. Sounds pretty scary, right?

Let’s break it down. Spatial awareness consists of these main aspects:

Location: Helps us understand the context of an object’s position – whether it’s above, below, or behind something else. It lets us navigate our surroundings and know exactly where things are in relation to one another.

Distance: Helps you sense how far or close an object is. Based on this perception, your brain adjusts your body’s movements to interact with the object—whether that means moving towards it, around it, or away from it. It also guides your muscles to grab the object precisely, knowing exactly where it is in space.

Movement: Spatial awareness helps you track how people and objects move through space, allowing you to navigate your surroundings with ease. It lets you avoid collisions, maintain a comfortable distance, and move smoothly through busy environments.

Social: Also, spatial awareness can affect social functions like the maintenance of personal space. We all know the feeling of someone standing way too close. Well, maybe they are not rude, they just have weak spacial awareness.

Reading and writing: A spatial understanding is needed for understanding sentence structure and grammar.

How do we effectively train spatial awareness?
